About Me - Rose Whitcomb

Music Education & Performance

Music Education

As an equity-focused General Music Teacher for grades K-12 at Everett Public Schools (Greater Boston Area - North Shore), versatility is one of my most useful qualities as an educator and musician. I play many instruments, including clarinet, piano, violin, guitar, and more, and I love to sing. I believe that versatility in an artist allows the best ones to touch every member of their audience. In a high quality educator and performer, this should come across in the classroom, on stage, and anywhere else where there is music, learning, engagement, and joy. To me, versatility is the quality to resonate with many different interests and perspectives in harmony all at once.

In my classroom, I pursue inclusivity and equity in my teaching practices and curriculum. I serve students with behavioral and/or developmental disabilities, and autism, and I also work ELL students by incorporating aspects of social-emotional learning, universal design for learning, and therapeutic crisis intervention strategies. Learning these strategies and incorporating them into my teaching practices alongside my own creativity has put me on the path to building equitable music education programs that engage all students by encouraging artistic expression… a meaningful communication skill that can enhance students’ future music-making and joyful social interaction.

My teaching style is flexible and responsive to my student’s needs. In my lessons, I thrive on creating a consistent routine and structure so my students have fun in my class. Flexibility, versatility, creativity, and high expectations are all important tenants of my teaching philosophy, in order to help all students and artists succeed. Finally, my warmth and sincerity allows me to build relationships and trust with my students that help them want to be in music class.
